The theme of conflict in the films is also handled differently. Pocahontas, in trying to absolve the British, sets up a situation that is largely symmetrical: both the British and the Powhatan are generally good people who irrationally fear people who are different. While the situation is tense, both parties want the same thing, so the resolution is essentially simple: to not give into hate and stop fighting. Princess Mononoke presents a more common kind of conflict, where more than two groups are present and the groups have different, often incompatible goals. As in Pocahontas, major conflicts in Princess Mononoke between groups trace back to the interests of a few, select villains who inspire hate in others, though even here the films differ.
