English Critical Essay -Talking in Whispers A novel in which the protagonist can be considered a modern day hero is ‘Talking In Whispers,’ by James Watson. The novel is set during the Chilean Revolution of 1970, and tells the story of Andres Larreta, who struggles to resist the oppressive regime of the military government. Throughout the novel it can be seen that Andres is a brave character and this very distinct characteristic is noticed when Andres shows bravery through his arrogance, for example: “ ’But I can’t breath-this hood.’ Would they batter him again for insolence, for showing courage?” This therefore shows Andres is aware of his bravery and foolishness. However he also shows he is brave enough to contradict his torturers.
