Stephanie Small October 25, 2003 Thesis: A societal foundation based on the five moral precepts along with increasing amounts of activism would contribute to actualization of the nine steps involved within Sulak Sivaraksa’s vision of peace. In general terms, the adoption of the five moral precepts would gradually work to form an ethically sound global community. Vowing to abstain from the taking of life, similar to the concept of ahimsa, encourages pacifism. Vowing to abstain from stealing decreases the probability of corruption. Vowing to abstain from sexual misconduct promotes the betterment of gender relations, while also preventing the subjection of women. Vowing to abstain from false speech curbs the use of persuasive propaganda utilized to make people “want more than they really need.”(pg.78) Finally, vowing to abstain from intoxicants would not only make for better health on a personal basis, but also destroy the inevitably fraudulent industries that produce addictive substances.
