HOW INCREMENTAL EXERCISE HAS AN EFFECT ON YOUR HEART RATE

Task 3

Introduction

Incremental exercise is when the exercise intensity changes at regular intervals putting a higher strain on the bodies systems. Incremental exercise makes the heart work harder but at different times, in a game of football the possession of the ball may not be where you are positioned on the field, this means that you will be resting and your heart won’t be working as hard. When the ball comes to your area of the pitch you will be running a lot and putting higher strain on the heart to make your muscles work harder then when the possession goes away from you your heart will slow down and won’t be working as hard.
This experiment looks at the ways in which when work rate increases or gets harder the heart has to work faster to pump the blood around the body to get to all the necessary muscles. Heart rate is defined as the number of heart contractions per minute and in this Incremental exercise experiment heart rate will be used to define how hard the heart is working per minute. Borg scale will also be used, after every minute the performer will be asked how they are feeling the intensity of exercise is on a scale of 1-10.

Task 4

Literature Review

Heart rate monitor

In training electronic devices like Heart rate monitors are used to pick up heart rate automatically and then sending the information to a watch like device. This method of measuring heart rate has been proved to be extremely accurate and a lot less complicated then the finger on pulse method.

The heart rate monitor starts working from the minute its attached to your body. When you start training your heart rate increases rapidly in proportion to the intensity of the exercise your doing. In Heart Rate Monitors, the transmitter belt detects the electrocardiogram (ECG - the electric signal originating from your heart) and sends an electromagnetic signal to the wrist receiver where heart rate information appears.

The heart moves blood from the lungs (where the blood picks up oxygen) to the muscles (which burn the oxygen as fuel) and back to the lungs again. The harder the training, the more fuel the muscles need and the harder the heart has to work to pump oxygen-rich blood to the muscles.
As you get fit, your heart is able to pump more blood with every beat. As a result, your heart doesn’t have to beat as often to get the needed oxygen to your muscles, decreasing resting heart rate and exercise heart rate on all exertion levels.

Another way of monitoring your heart rate is the quick method of counting how many pulsations you have in one minute.
Counting the pulse at the carotid artery has proven to be the easiest place to locate the pulse.
