Edgar Hilaire-Germain Degas
Sheena Ashley Whitmire
Edgar Degas was born in Paris, France on July 19, 1834 to a wealthy banking family. Degas is usually considered an Impressionist, and he exhibited with the Impressionists, but he considered himself a Realist. (Kelder 277) Although Degas did not have a family member who was an artist, he came from a prominent family rich in culture. ... Degas inherited his father’s deep love of music and theater and a respect for the craft and skill of the musicians, actors, and dancers. (Kelder 283) Degas’ father wanted him to be a lawyer or businessman. Eventually after Degas abandoned law school, the father and son reconciled to Edgar becoming a painter. (Boggs 6)
Edgar Degas attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, but he was unhappy. ... All of Degas’ teachers were considered traditional instructors who believed their work to be an extension of the classical tradition and therefore encouraged any young students to study and copy the art of the past, particularly classical antiquity and the Italian Renaissance.
