In present-day American culture race plays a major role in our lives. Living in suburban America formed my first opinion of race. ... Broadening my horizons and moving out of suburban life to a big city rapidly changed my views on race and ethnicity. Race is more than someone’s name or one’s physical characteristics; race is a state of mind, a specific way of thinking unique to everyone. ... I did not even think of myself of having any type of connection with the Mexican race because of my background. My parents, my teachers, and everybody I associated with never made my race an issue. ... In my mind I could not be associated with a race that has that reputation. At this point in my life I felt ashamed of my name and my race. My opinion of the Mexican race completely influenced my life because I became defensive to the fact that I could be associated with that race. ... In the initial interview before even being accepted to school the dean of students asked me about my race. ... For the first time I had to answer the question of my race on my own and I had to express my opinion to impress someone and show my intelligence, rather than defend myself. ...
