Will Over Skill

GAME FIVE OF THE 1997 NBA FINALS AND ALL EYES ARE ON ONE MAN: Dehydrated and exhausted from a bad case of the stomach flu, Michael Jordan steps onto the court and immediately feels faint. Jordan scores 38 points in 44 minutes including a three-pointer with 25 seconds left to clinch the game, but the numbers don’t matter. It was that night out of many amazing nights for Michael Jordan where he showed his true colours, the desire and determination to win. One man. One heart. One basketball game. It is the heart and desire to win that separates the amazing athletes from the good athletes. Today’s athletes are faced with strenuous challenges, competition is tougher and the skill level is higher. Among the best of those athletes, the ones who have the heart determine those who are most successful. Athletes train for hours a day and learn all the different tactics to beat each opponent. As the saying goes, hard work pays off. Right? Take two teams of equal skill and let them play against each other. Who will win that game? Both teams face the seemingly impossible challenge of defeating each other but one team comes out with the desire to win. It’s the recipe for success and the difference between triumph and failure. Every athlete must have a focus on what they can do as an individual and learn that believing comes before achieving. As parents and coaches, we always reassure our kids that winning isn’t everything. However, we don’t expand to the truth of this statement, winning isn’t everything but wanting to win is everything.
