Is Gun Control a Bad Idea?
Gun control is a very controversial issue. In the United States, gun control means government regulation of the possession and use of firearms by private citizens (Aitkens 10) . There are many good reasons to have gun control in the United States but also there are a lot of good reasons why not to have gun control. The controversy of gun control revolves around topics such as the Second Amendment, crime rate, the Brady Act and personal protection. The people who support gun control, who are mostly Democrats, believe that if gun control is properly enforced it would reduced the number of crimes as well as gun related accidents. But the people who are opposed to gun control, who are mostly Republicans, believe that gun control will never take away guns from the criminals and that it is against the Second Amendment which gives the right of citizens to bear arms.
One of the main arguments of gun control is the meaning of the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution which states, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed" (Gun Cite) . ... To the Republican the Second Amendment means that they have to right, according to the words in the Second Amendment, to be able to carry a gun on them at all times without question. It does not mean that they can carry a gun that can cause mass destruction such as a cannon or automatic machine gun (Gun Cite) . It states that he or she my carry a gun for his or her personal protection and to protect his or her property.
However, opponents of gun control feel that there are many arguments of the Second Amendment such as the time that it was written. ... Guns of today are now used for personal protection against criminals, for gun shows and for recreational hunting. ... People who support gun control believe that it means that the people may only bear arms to protect the security of the state (Aitkens 29) . ...
The people who are against gun control believe that the words “people” mean all Americans as individuals (Aitkens 29) . ...
Another argument of gun control is crime rate. The opponents of gun control believe that enforcing gun control will not have an effect on crime rate because it would not keep criminals from purchasing weapons.
