Although the First Symphony by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was not premiered until the composer was middle aged, its genesis dates from 1854, when he was only 21. ... Yet, perhaps because it evolved slowly, this symphony has a unique and masterful expression that accords it a special place among the orchestral works of Brahms. His long-time friend Clara Wieck recalled seeing some sketches of it and a nearly-completed first movement, yet it wasnt until September of 1876 that Brahms finished the piece. ... Many observers were surprised that the first symphony of such an important composer was not premiered in Vienna where Brahms lived, but the composer had good reasons for his choice. ...
