Plato a Greek philosopher in the fourth century believed that there was a second reality above ours. This is the world of the forms. Plato wrote the cave allegory to show this. The cave begins ‘imagine an underground chamber like a cave with an entrance open to the daylight, but running a long way in’ This tells me how far into the cave it is, and also how far away from reality we can be. He also describes the prisoners he says that they have been chained to a wall they can only see right ahead of them. this shows the prisoners can only see dead ahead as though it is a one track mind and as though that is all we can see of the world. Plato uses this to tell us how we are like the prisoners, we can only see a tiny proportion of our reality.
