Primary sources are vital sources of information dating directly from the past, such as original written documentation, paintings and pottery. ... The same can be said for the study of daily life in ancient Greece. The pottery of this time, dating from the 8th to the 1st century, shows itself to be a veritable library of information regarding the daily lives of Greek citizens. In my attempt to discuss what this pottery tells us about life at that time I will be basing my studies on both black figure vases and red figure vases. These chronologically listed examples show themselves to be excellent in their documentation of all aspects of daily life in Greece.
Perhaps one of the best insights we get into daily life in Greece from black figure vases is in terms of dress. ... It must be mentioned that in many black figure scenes citizens appear naked, though it is generally taken that this is not a case of art imitating life, but rather a penchant of the artist.
With regards to domestic life, black figure vases do not provide us with very much information.
