Far away in one of the most beautiful and exotic parts of the world, lies a region that has been embroiled in conflict for far too long. At the western end of the Himalayas, Kashmir is caught among the clash of Hindu-India and Muslim-Pakistan, three wars have been fought. For over fifty years, “insurgents have crossed the line of control, bullets have flown and people have died, still, nothing seemed to change” (Sharma, 62). But one thing has changed in current situations; each of the states now has nuclear weapons. “In 1998, Pakistan and India shocked the world by conducting nuclear tests…” (New York Times). As spelt out by Rourke, “War is hell”(331), the ongoing war which has destroyed the once beautiful Kasmir is a clear example. In the 1990’s, India went a step further to be the first to introduce weapons of mass destruction.
