Subject: Malnutrition in the province of Chaco, Argentina.
This memo concerns with respect of your petition for me to research on a problem of our current society in Argentina. To my understanding, the problem of malnutrition is a substantial problem which the government must immediately take action on for the sake of our society.
Context of political situation in Argentina
It is of public awareness the difficult situation that the country of Argentina has been going through for the past years, reaching important levels of poverty, which have been increasing due to the economic paralysis, turning the problem of alimentary assistance into an obligatory cause which the government must take care of.
Therefore, it turns out inevitable that the government should take action on this subject, and provide citizens with the basic food needed so as to abolish the vulnerable population to suffer from malnutrition. ... The problem that I will therefore address, is “Starvation of young children in the province of Chaco (Argentina.)”
Conditions to suffer “malnutrition”
To begin with, I will define the conditions for a person to suffer of malnutrition. According to the Health World Organization, the word “malnutrition” is characterized by a disequilibria between the nutrients we ingest and the energy with spend and the needs of our body for its development and growth. ... Other fatal consequences of malnutrition can be malformation of the bones (when lacking of calcium) or anemia (when lacking of proteins.) As stated before, it is clear that young children are the most damaged sector concerning malnutrition, therefore, I will focus my policy in children from the conception stage (pregnant women) to five year-old children (included.)
Causes that lead to malnutrition
One of the major causes of malnutrition in the area of Chaco was due to the low level of instruction of mothers. ...
Policy alternatives to solve the problem
In order to strike the problem of malnutrition I considered different policy alternatives. ... In addition, children and pregnant women will be informed about the importance of malnutrition and be informed about its consequences. ...
The second alternative, which is the one that proposes to “build soupkitchens” was also not one of the best proposals, because it is not compatible with malnutrition in the sense that malnutrition is a problem which needs a rapid solution and building soupkitchens would not have an immediate result, but it would show its effects in the long run. ... It is not an immediate solution to the problem of malnutrition, but it is for sure a good alternative policy when considering the fact that people in Chaco will be in a future able to self supply themselves with vegetables. ... This last statement it is an important one when considering malnutrition as an urgent problem to solve. In addition, this alternative policy will consequently beneficiate the population in the province of Chaco, because families in Chaco will be encourage to send children to school (Kindergarden when we refer to children who are 1 to 5 years old), not specially because they might want to provide learning to their children, but just because it is at schools where children will be supplied with a nutritional plate of food.
