Reflections on Power
Power, one simple word that contains many different conceptions. Whether it is spiritual power in the afterlife or an absolute monarchy in the present life, in the end, power holds the same basic meaning in this world as depicted in many art forms.
As shown in the Victory stele of Naram-Sin, Akkadians perceived power to be held by the king and only the king. Having introduced a new concept of royal power, the king’s subordinates possessed an “unswerving loyalty to the king. ... It can be perceived that Naram-Sin’s opponent does not maintain such power as the Akkadian absolute monarchy as they [Lullubi] are crushed by the feet of Naram-Sin’s troops and lie in a disorderly fashion in contrast to the Akkadian.
