Many people make statements about Anthony Swofford as an honest recorder and observer to himself and to others. I agree with the statement after reading his novel. He records about his family, his friends and his experiences in the military. Also the fear of dying, pain of losing love ones, friends, and the dark side of the Marine. It is all in his novel ¡§Jarhead¡¨. As Swofford describes about his family, we can see that his family influenced him significantly. His father served in Vietnam and his grandfather in WWI. When Swofford is a high school student, a Marine tells his Dad, ¡§He will be a great killer.¡¨ Swofford states it is the last time that people say something encouraging to him. His life becomes more difficult and challenging. He has a sister with a history of emotional problems and a brother who died of cancer. ¡§The Term suicide watch always makes me think of my older sister. I didn¡¦t know what suicide was until she tried to kill herself a few times¡¨ (Page 66, jarhead). His sister¡¦s suicide attempts affect Swofford¡¦s life later on while in the military when he is emotionally hurt.
