I was born Marion Michael Morrison. I was born in a small town in Iowa. In the 1920s, I attended and played football for the University of Southern California (USC). I started as a stuntman and crew member for small congenial low-budget westerns. Some were directed by John Ford, who later became my mentor, directing me in a number of films. In 1929, I landed my first starring role in a small western entitled, "The Big Trail". For the next decade, I made approximately five dozen B-movies that are considered to be my "education" into film roles by movie critics today.
