Unto A Good Land Theme Analysis

Emily Grimshaw
October 2003
FTS
After crossing the ocean and traveling thousands of miles from home, the Swedish immigrants in, Unto a Good Land, finally came to the land they hoped would fulfill their dreams of prosperity. They traveled to the end of civilization in America to find land where good farming soil was waiting for them. Unbeknownst to them, the land there was better than they hoped; it was fresh and had not been used by previous generations. This land, just like the new life they would be starting, was better than the life they had in Sweden. ... This novel presents a theme: America allowed immigrants to start a new and better life than that they had in Sweden.
This theme was first manifested when the immigrants successfully landed in America. ... The sixteen Swedish immigrants traveling together spread out in Battery Park, taking advantage of the opportunity they had to walk and run on land rather than riding in a boat. ... At this very moment, in the first few hours on this new land, it seemed that this land would be a wonderful new home. Food that once was scarce in Sweden could now be eaten every day because this land was prosperous. ... Many of these new immigrants had experiences to teach them that this land will be good, but there would be troublesome times that have to be lived through. These negative experiences illustrated that America wasn’t as perfect of a land as perceived, but if people strive to live through bad experiences with their heads held high, good things will eventually come. ... This experience helped Karl Oskar realize that there were many new things about this Land of Opportunity and he would need to be cautious thorough the processes of making this land his new home.
