Ernest Hemingway Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois, which is a suburb of Chicago. He was one of six children. He was raised in a strict household and no enjoyment was to be taken on Sundays. His father was a strong member of the church. His mother sang in the church choir. His mother taught him music and creativity by bringing him to concerts, art galleries and operas while his father taught him to love nature, how to build fires, how to fish and hunt and even taught Ernest physical courage and endurance. Ernest’s winters were spent in Chicago and his summers at Bear Lake. When Ernest reached adolescence, he had developed in to a well-rounded young man who was “afraid of nothing”, which appeared to be his motto. He loved nature and he sought scrupulously to uphold the code of physical courage and endurance learned by his father. He had a determination to do things properly. While attending high school, he wrote articles for the school newspaper and was very good academically in English but uninterested in most other subjects.
