Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” Jonathan Swift begins his “Modest Proposal” by addressing a problem that is widely spread throughout society. He belittles the obligation of parenting by calling it a grievance and proposing a solution to the so-called “problem”. By doing this he is revealing what so many parents of his time feel about their children. He is in a sense calling all parents bad people, who wish to rid themselves of any responsibility or obligation. He begins to tell of how useless children are and how bothersome they can be. This is ironic because the very thing he wishes to get rid of will be the source that runs his plan to better benefit the public. Swift tells of how the plan will help get rid of unwanted infants gained through unwanted or unplanned sexual intercourse. He says this will allow for mothers to kill their babies and not feel bad, because now they will be used for the good of the public. This in my opinion would only encourage the young women to practice premarital intercourse thus defeating the purpose. It will encourage the practice because it shows that premarital relations will not only produce pleasure, but a fruit of which money can be made off of in society. Lastly it is ironic that Swift says that the purposeful murdering of babies will reduce the amount of voluntary abortions.
