This masterpiece by Naipaul is not only a great historical reference of Central Africa and Africa in general; but more importantly a very informant analysis of economic development not only in the continent of Africa, but the entire globe.

They blocked themselves out from the rest of the world, unwillingly depriving them of any knowledge of a better life, according to Naipaul. ...
As the story progresses this small Central African colony eventually becomes independent, Naipaul refers to the new “free” state as the New Domain. ... Naipaul refers to the President’s officers with the passage “The flag and the President’s portrait were only like their fetishes, the sources of their authority. ... These are all points Naipaul is trying to get across. ... Naipaul talks about people fleeing to Europe in his passage “They want the goods and the properties and at the same time they need a safe place for their money. ... Naipaul further adds that the developed countries, in this case London, are so big and busy you see very little is happening. ... Naipaul’s storyline is directly parallel to, let’s not forget, the OPEC oil crisis of the 1970’s that affected economies all over the globe.
Naipaul is “on the money”. I don’t think that Naipaul could be more right about economic development in Central Africa and economic development in general.
