Salvador Dali once said, “The only difference between myself and a madman is that I am not mad.” Dali was a Spanish artist that led the Surrealist movement of artwork beginning in the 1920’s. His artwork was both a result of his complex personality and natural genius. He began painting when he was only ten years old and quickly developed his abilities to an accomplished level by his late teens. His artwork transformed through these early years, beginning with paintings that reflected his love of landscapes. He initially considered himself an Impressionist but by the age of twenty-three, he had begun to experiment with cubism; a style that other artists such as Picasso had began to develop in the previous few years. This was the initial step towards a dramatic change that would take place in his artwork in subsequent years.
