Among the many worries of bilingual education is the worry that the primary language is learned at the expense of the mainstream language. We must remember, however, “ the label bilingual often conceals more about the student than it reveals”. (Thonis, 172) This is to say that a student whose needs are other than those regarding language will often be overlooked because the title “bilingual” is intended to be all encompassing. ... Throughout my childhood, I was technically bilingual, although not equally fluent as the word suggests. ... I was embarrassed to be seen with the “bilingual kids” as they were largely ostracized and secluded (probably not on purpose) from the mainstream students. ... Suddenly, I went from being bilingual to being non-lingual.
