God in Genesis chapters 1 – 3
In the first three chapters of Genesis we see two very different interpretations of God. There is one, written as a P narrative, Chapter 1 – 2 vs. ... 5 to chapter 3, written as J narrative. These two ideas of God vary greatly, and clearly show two different peoples views and thoughts behind God.
In the first expression of God, we see God as creation ex nihilo, or creating out of nothing. He merely needs to speak, and what he wants is done, “And God said, let there be light: and there was” 1:3. This kind of speech and occurrence continues in chapter one, giving God a sense of power and omniscient, knowing what the world is going to need straight away and being able to create it by just saying the words.
After most things God creates it says it was “good”. Saying this gives the impression that God is perfect, and gets it right without having to try several times.
As the “story” continues, we see that God creates everything, from the birds to the great whales. Then God creates man “in our own likeness” and gives man dominion over everything else, plants, and animals alike, in the world.
