Was Louis XVIII successful as King of France? ...
Louis XVIII was king of France between 1815 and 1824. ... During Louis’s time as king, many important changes and incidents happened for the French people, many of which I feel Louis handled with great shrewdness and intelligence; therefore I feel that as king of France, Louis XVIII was a success. ... On the other hand, there is evidence that Louis could have been described as a poor king, with, even though he was not directly involved, the ‘white terror’ and the Ultra government, which had power. Moreover, Louis could be seen to have been unsuccessful because he did not make plans for a successor to him, as Charles X took France to the extremes, which it did not need to go.
There is an argument to say that Louis failed as king but I do not feel it is that strong. Louis should not have let an Ultra government reign in France at all, as it could only cause trouble. ... After having a long war, and with France in a terrible state after it, the last thing it needed was an ultra government which, it could be said is Louis’ fault. In addition to the above argument, another failure under Louis was that when he became more occupied with his health and left the running of the country to Artois and Villele, it meant that ultras had power, which was a mistake.
