The Black-White wealth divide in the 21st century plays a major role in the lives of many African-Americans in today’s society. The main reason that whites have higher financial status is due to their actual wealth, and not just their regular income. ... Wealth is the accumulated assets that one builds up over time, and is usually passed down from generation to generation. Melvin Oliver and Thomas Shapiro’s book, Black Wealth/ White Wealth, explains why today’s society is divided in such an unequal manner.
There are many factors that have led to up to this large social/wealth gap between the two races. ... , FHA, and the Social Security Act of 1935, and tell how all of these enforced restrictions on blacks that did not allow for any wealth to be established.
