Running head: CORPORATE AMERICA Values in Corporate America Abstract The values in Corporate America are a subject that is neither black nor white. In the days of the past, a handshake would count as an unbreakable contract. People’s values use to connect to their morals. People were loyal to companies and unlikely to “shop around” for more money. That was the utopian society of the business world. Now in today’s time and culture, a person’s word is only good if written, notarized, and entrapped in finely written clauses unbreakable by scandalous lawyers and protected by bankruptcies. This paper takes a close look at business ethics, values, and spirituality in the workplace. . Values in Corporate America Some would say that mentioning values and the business world in the same sentence would be an oxymoron. Other just say that they are not in any way linked together. There are the few that are on track when they feel that the lack of values in Corporate America is the cause of the workplace spiraling down hill. The business and its value systems are only as good as the employees and the leaders of the company make it. Ultimatly, the individual is the total key to success. Business ethics can be broken down into three basic areas. These areas include but not limmited to; standard, politics, and virtue ( Shaw, 1996). Each or the three shall be explored within this paper. When looking around and witnessing all of the scandals that are being conducted with in the business world, one could easily assertain the idea that values are no longer in place in the corporate world. That being said, I feel as though business can succeed even when looking out for the best interest of those around. The other main point that will be explored in the content of this essay will be spirituality in the workplace. Many feel that this topic is not viable to be discussed when researching corporations. After reading this research paper, the link between spirituality and the work place will be understandable. Business Ethics In many universities across the world, classes covering Business Ethics are now offered. This however is a relatively a new thing. As of twenty-five years ago, business ethics was not recognized as an academic specialty (Shaw, 1996). Business Ethics can be broken down into three sub categories or three models. These models consist of the standard model, politics model, and the virtue model. The standard model focuses on the individual and the moral choices that may be presented to the individual at any given time (Shaw, 1996). A corporation is only as good as the individuals with in the working units that construct the overall company. The standard model is a good model however presents several weaknesses as well as strengths. The standard model also has many philosophers on each side, those for it, and those against it. The first defining feature is that the standard model addresses business related issues to ones moral principals.
