Jewish History The high priesthood had always been thought of as a holy position. The high priest was someone who dedicated their whole life to service of G-d. The high priest was not interested in being rich or owning land. You never would think that a high priest would be corrupt. In Jerusalem, the law of the land was the law of the torah, meaning that the high priest could not own land, and commerce was not done on Shabbat. If Jerusalem got hellenized, and became a Polis, with a Boule, the law of the land would no longer be based on the torah, therefore the high priest would be able to own land, and there would be commerce on Shabbat.
