Purpose of sexuality within The Stranger by Albert Camus and Pedro P ramo by Juan Rulfo
Throughout both The Stranger (Albert Camus) and Pedro Páramo (Juan Rulfo), sexuality is used purposely to develop the distinctive character personalities which evokes different emotions from the audience. Within the two works, the authors use two main female characters when presenting sexuality. This not only presents the “insanity” of the feminine figures within the text, but also the disregard by the society in which these characters are located. Whether used to create an understanding of the feminine role or to produce empathy within the audience, the feature of sexuality was purposeful for each. Both authors introduced sexuality similarly by how the personas are presented and the overall effects it had on the audience. ... Within The Stranger and Pedro Páramo, both authors use female personifications to portray and further identify the eroticism within their novels. Rulfo uses the female character Susana San Juan to develop the sexuality throughout Pedro Páramo. ... This is an excerpt from when Dorotea is speaking with Juan Preciado at Susana’s long lost love’s grave grave, “ (…) By the time they brought her to him, she was already suffering – maybe crazy.” (Rulfo, 1994, p. ... Others criticize Susana regarding her openness about her sexual encounters, within her past and present, yet she does not mind. This can be seen in her conversation with her father about Pedro Páramo, “ ‘I’m sure you would’ ‘Did I hear what you said? ... ’” (Rulfo, 1994, p. 84) Susana is a widow; the experiences within her are vast enough to be able to understand her life and the surrounding circumstances. ... “But what world was Susana San Juan living in? That was one of the things Pedro Páramo would never know.” (Rulfo, 1994, p.95) Within The Stranger, Albert Camus presents sexuality intensely, especially by the choice of character through which it is introduced. ... The tone Camus uses while describing her and the occurring events obviously make Meursault attracted to Marie.
