In this case the treatment team faces a very difficult decision. It was agreed that Monica’s tumor was inoperable and chemo and radiation would be useless. She cannot be extubated and tracheostomy would be very risky. Her life expectancy is seen to be no more than three months. In her current state Monica is obviously unable to discuss further treatment with the doctors. There are two choices that they have to choose from: proceed to make her comfortable with no care or attempt to wake her to discuss the diagnosis and prognosis with her and try to ascertain her preferences among her few alternatives. In this paper I will argue why waking Monica is the best alternative in this situation. Monica should be woken up so that she can at least have the opportunity to decide on the course of treatment that she is to receive. In order to decide what is in her best interest she should be made aware of the condition that she is in. because of moral, ,and spiritual beliefs that she may have she should be able to be presented with her case. She should be involved in the decision making process that will ultimately affect the rest of her life, even if her time has been drastically cut short. Even though she is still with her husband it is not always in the patient’s best interest to let the spouse decide. He too is also caught up in the whirlwind of emotions of finding out that his spouse is sick and he may too be incompetent to make rational decisions regarding the woman he loves and has spent the majority of his life with. He may be too caught up in the pain he too is feeling and may not be able to make good sound decisions when he is faced with the facts. His whole being will be hurting for his wife, and also for himself and what he is losing.
