Abstract
The images we see today of former President Abraham Lincoln are cynical, comical and disrespectful. ... Lincoln is often called honest Abe, but in reality he detested the name Abe, and no one called him that intimately. ... For instance, in commercials illustrated with him and George Washington together, Lincoln is always the one made to look uneducated, and stupid, making silly expressions. ... It seems that every important person in history has an HBO movie special, but to date there is none of Lincoln, which shows how well he is respected or revered in history. In addition, in the infamous movie Glory about civil war black regiments attaining the right to combat --- Lincoln is merely mentioned, and never attributed to his authorities commanding the war. These images are not faithful or true of the real Lincoln and his fortitude, and intelligence. ... This position paper’s object is to learn why Lincoln has become a laughing stock, and why media advertising images show mostly negative depictions of him –-- and contrast his images recently to those many years ago. ...
Essay Introduction
Abraham Lincoln’s portrayal in media advertising, movies, and advertisement has been less than stellar over the past several decades. It is important to understand that a negative image was a typical depiction of Lincoln. Lincoln was often ridiculed and the bunt of jokes from his scholarly and sophisticated Congressmen. Lincoln was self educated and was known to work for his father as a rail splitter. However, there was someone who made the most appropriate comment about Lincoln to date, his rivalry and debate opponent, Stephen Douglas. ... Douglas was not beguiled by Lincoln’s ‘homey’ appeal; instead he realized what people today still have trouble identifying. That Lincoln was a force to be remembered. In addition, Lincoln took the lawyers bar, passed, and began a practice with a partner. Lincoln had an indomitable humor that he often displayed.
