The images we see today of former President Abraham Lincoln are cynical, comical and disrespectful. ... Lincoln is often called honest Abe, but in reality he detested the name Abe, and no one called him that intimately. ... For instance, in commercials illustrated with him and George Washington together, Lincoln is always the one made to look uneducated, and stupid, making silly expressions. ... Essay Introduction

Abraham Lincoln’s portrayal in media advertising, movies, and advertisement has been less than stellar over the past several decades. It is important to understand that a negative image was a typical depiction of Lincoln. Lincoln was often ridiculed and the bunt of jokes from his scholarly and sophisticated Congressmen. Lincoln was self educated and was known to work for his father as a rail splitter. However, there was someone who made the most appropriate comment about Lincoln to date, his rivalry and debate opponent, Stephen Douglas. ... Douglas was not beguiled by Lincoln’s ‘homey’ appeal; instead he realized what people today still have trouble identifying. That Lincoln was a force to be remembered. In addition, Lincoln took the lawyers bar, passed, and began a practice with a partner. Lincoln had an indomitable humor that he often displayed.
