When Romero is first deescribed in the novel, he is called "a fine boy" and a "good-looking kid" (163). Pedro is only nineteen years old(163), much younger than the main characters, who are in their thirties. ... Pedro wants to marry Brett, but he wants her to have long hair and "never leave him", which is basically a Victorian marriage. ... He is also at ease with his masculinity. ... " Brett realizes that Pedro is an independent man, unlike her other conquests, who grovel and beg, and that her inability to become a settle down would destroy Pedro and his career.
