Artworks reflect the artist’s response to the world.
Analyse this statement with references to specific artists and their work. ... It is such events that people respond to the great influences of their world- their experiences, their society, the ideologies and discourses. Artists reflect these responses in their artwork in subtle or more confronting ways. The fast-paced modern world of Pablo Picasso, the war stricken world of Francis Bacon and the materialistic society of Willem De Kooning can be seen reflected in the formal qualities of their artworks such as colour, shape and symbolism.
Pablo Picasso, born in Spain, 1881, is seen as the father of the Cubism movement. He lived in a world of rapid change in ways of thinking, advancing technology and machines, discoveries and science. ... Picasso, along with other cubist artists, wished to reflect their amazement with this new world and rid of conventional qualities in their artworks. He was not concerned with traditional beauty but looked for a new visual language in looking at the world. ... With the invention of the camera, art no longer needed to be a window onto the world so he created a more subjective response. ...
Francis Bacon grew up surrounded by works such as Picasso’s, however, he took on a different approach as he was responding to a considerably different world. Bacon was born in Britain, 1910, and lived through both world wars. At a young age he was already exposed to the mass destruction and death brought about by war which significantly impacted his view of the world. When Bacon began painting his more major works he was deeply disturbed by the horrific massacres, ill treatment and suffering endured by people during the Holocaust and World War two (1939-1945). His response was disgust in the inhumanity of man. In Bacon’s artworks he uses horrific imagery and symbolism, gruesome images of flesh and crucifixion and conjures up feelings of isolation and terror reflecting his feelings towards the world.
Equally as confronting, Willem de Kooning showed similar negativity towards humans and society but again his style was completely different. De Kooning lived and worked around the same time as Bacon but on the other side of the globe, the USA.
