The principal characters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, paragons of sense and sensibility in that order are unique in their own way and their contradicting personalities have their own advantages as well as drawbacks. While Elinor possesses good sense and prudence, her consistent self-repression makes her risk rigidity; she conceals feeling until she hardly knows how to reveal it and hardly wants to. While Marianne wins universal sympathy, Elinor suffers the anguish of abandonment, unable to share her pain. In contrast, Marianne, the heroine of sensibility, abhors concealment of feelings but almost dies because of her indulgence in emotion.
