Orbitz has definitely increased competition in online travel, and in particular it has increased price competition. That is a good thing for consumers. However, Orbitz' competitors do not welcome the price competition, and have launched an extensive lobbying campaign to force Orbitz to stop acting as a price competitor. Though the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) recently acknowledged that price competition in the travel distribution marketplace is working by proposing new Computer Reservation System (CRS) regulations that do not extend to the Internet, the competitors are not giving up the fight. They are continuing their efforts to convince regulators to regulate the Internet marketplace and intervene directly in Orbitz business model by taking the extreme step of striking a provision from the valid contracts Orbitz already has with 42 airlines.
