Birth of a Nation absolutely blew my mind. The first hour and a half or so reminded me distinctly of North and South in respects to storyline. Since the latter was later made, I can’t help think someone wanted to go right where DW Griffiths seemed to go so wrong. Another thing that struck me are the similarities in scene, camera style, and costume between Birth of A Nation and Gangs of New York. There were several scenes that absolutely reminded me of Gangs. For example, the battle seen where the two younger brothers meet and die, is similar to the battle scene at the beginning of Gangs Of New York in camera angle, and the emotions displayed on the actors’ faces. The mood seemed similar as well. The messages portrayed in this film make it very difficult to concentrate on things like lighting and scenery, but the use of the iris technique is very obvious, as is the idea of going on ‘location’.
