... For the past twenty some odd years, Professor Gitlin has been teaching large classes in a lecture hall; he lectures, while his students take notes. But recently Professor Gitlins monotonous routine has been thrown off balance: a new Internet company is offering students “canned notes”. With a professors approval, a graduate student would attend lectures, take notes, and type them up, whereupon the note taking service, Black Lightening, would duplicate the notes and offer them to students for a nominal fee (Gitlin p. ... On the contrary, many students are opposed to these “canned notes”, claiming that the notes shortchange students on the college experience. ... The use of canned notes should be an individual decision. ... If a student feels as though they can get by in a class by bypassing the lecture and going straight for the notes, then so be it. ... I welcome the idea of canned notes, as I feel I would be comprehending much more of the lecture. “I don’t see why you can’t have lectures and notes,” says student Noriko Hashimoto. “The notes would serve as a supplement, a reminder of what the professor said.
