Gender Discrimination at Work
Equal pay has enforced as the law since1963, but today, 40 years later, women are still paid less than men, even though they have similar experience, education and skills. The gender pay gap still exists, partly because many women are still segregated into a few low paying occupations. ... Research shows that the more an occupation is dominated by women, the less it pays and part of the gender pay gap results from differences in education, experience or time in the workforce but a significant portion cannot be explain by any of these factors; it would be attributable to discrimination or in other words certain jobs pay less because they are held by women. In order to understand why gender pay gap exist even when men and women are equally qualified, we must look at the certain “gender specific” factors. In my research paper I will try to explain these “gender specific” factors namely, differences in the industry and in the kind of jobs held by men and women, women’s late entrance into the workforce, and personal characteristic that determines the existence of the gender pay gap. ...
Because men are having jobs related to manufacturing and managerial that are said to be “suitable” to specific gender, therefore they are given the term blue-color which means higher income. ... These jobs are said to be “suitable” to a specific gender, which means that women and men are destined to hold some jobs that segregated them from each other. But biology cannot be a determinate of a “suitable” position foe a specific gender. For example: economist often uses the concept of human capital as a factor that attributes to the gender pay gap.
