There are many types of religion, and how each one came about is a story of its own. Some examples of religion are Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism. Many followers of these religions and others are very passionate, and breaking the rules of their religions would be unthinkable to them. Although, to other followers, these acts may not seem that sinful and corrupt. Jesus Christ, a follower of Judaism, contradicted the teachings of his own religion to lead another. Jesus was a Roman Jew. His parents were Mary and Joseph, who were very young when he was born. Jesus’ birthplace is uncertain. According to the Gospels, it is Bethlehem, but others believe that he was born in Nazareth. His date of birth is also uncertain, but people know that he was born sometime during the time of Herod I, and it is estimated that the year of birth was seven or six B.C. (Britannica). He died at the age of thirty-three when he was crucified on a cross (Fredriksen, 213). Again, Jesus Christ was Jewish. Pelikan states, “…according to the earliest portrayals Jesus was a Jew” (11). Judaism is the oldest religion in the Western world. It’s objective is to have justice, peace, and order throughout the world. Judaism is monotheistic, meaning that it teaches people to believe in only one god (“Judaism”, Groliers). In fact, Judaism was the first religion ever to teach monotheism. Monotheism is the basis of Judaism and is summed up well in this recitation: “Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One” (Grant, 153). There are other monotheistic religions, and each one has a name that the followers call their god. Jews call their god Yahweh. Jews abide by the Ten Commandments. The holy book of Judaism is the Torah. The Torah is like the Christian Bible. It is basically the Old Testament of the Bible. Jews don’t believe that they were chosen for any special privileges, but rather to spread the word of God (“Judaism”, Groliers). The Messiah also plays a big part in the religion of Judaism. The Messiah, meaning the “anointed one”, is someone who will be sent from God and will restore the world and save it from sin (“Messiah”, Groliers).
