Discuss the characters of Macbeth; Lady Macbeth and Duncan as they are presented in act one of ‘Macbeth’.
In this essay, I will be looking at the way William Shakespeare presents the characters of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and Duncan in his play ‘Macbeth’.
Our first thoughts of Macbeth are ones of a strong, capable fighter. ... We also feel that Macbeth is quite bloodthirsty. The first time we meet Macbeth is in scene 3, where he meets the witches for the first time, and hears their prophecy, but even before we meet him, we are told that he has fought well in battle, even Duncan describes him as ’O valiant cousin, worthy gentleman! ...
’All hail Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Glamis! All hail Macbeth, hail to thee, thane of Cawdor! All hail Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!’ (Act 1, scene 3, lines 48-50)
The witches greet Macbeth first of all as Thane of Glamis, which he already is, but when the witches go on to predict that he will be Thane of Cawdor and then King, Macbeth is very moved.
