The hardship comes alive through Clifton¡¯s use of the ¡°ghost¡± analogy. ¡°all week you have stood in my dreams/like a ghost, asking for time¡± The speaker is haunted by her father even in sleeping. The word ¡°ghost¡± symbolizes the worriment that Clifton has over the unpaid debts and lacks of care. Near the end of the poem, Clifton is seeking for closure because both parents are now rest-in-peace. He is dangerous to her, because the father couldn¡¯t provide enough care for his family. He is a lecher, who probably abuses his wife, and caused the early death of the mother. With the financial restraint, he couldn¡¯t pay for any of the bills, which causes the downfall on the family. Because of that, the family, including Clifton, was very upset with him. Every Friday night, when the father comes home, Clifton doesn¡¯t feel a sense of relief.
