The brisk mountain air is the first thing that I feel as I am roused by the annoying beeping from my alarm wristwatch at 4:30 in the morning. As I wrestle with myself about whether or not to crawl deeper into the warm confines of my sleeping bag for only a few more hours, I realize that I have a fifteen-mile day ahead and I want to get started as early as possible. After waking the rest of the groggy crew and all tents are broken down and sleeping bags stuffed in their stuff sacks I lead the crew down the trail toward the next rendezvous. As I try to navigate through the pre-dawn light I think about how perfect a day this might be; I’, hiking with a 65 pound pack up and down mountains, relying only on my survival skills and dehydrated food, there are no worries about bills to be paid or about what other people will think of me, its just me and my buds out for the week.
