What do I have to do and learn to be a successful teacher in an urban school?
The statement I made on September 9th reflects much of what I believe today. What’s changed is how I’ll act on those beliefs when I begin teaching in an urban school. I declared that I’d have to learn how my students’ backgrounds and upbringings in an urban school are different from the suburban upbringing and school I was taught in. ... In her book Professor Weiner insists, “Urban teachers need to understand the way conditions outside classrooms influence the way teachers and students act”.
I started to realize how important this was after watching the How We Feel video. ... When I teach I’ll remember the bridges immigrant children must cross, the frustration they often feel, and isolation they encounter from many who are supposed to help. I’ll encourage discourse about their native countries and the advantages of speaking multiple languages. By inviting students to discuss where they come from I hope to forge trusting relationships. I want to create a nurturing classroom environment where students feel safe to push themselves beyond their current boundaries and limitations. Class discussions regarding the Influence Of Teacher Attitudes On Success With The Underserved Population further highlighted the injustices immigrant children and their parents endure.
