In the case of Sears, Roebuck, and Co.: The Auto Center Scandal, the Auto Service Advisors (ASA) and mechanics are faced with the ethical dilemma of whether to repair vehicles properly (i.e.: repairing only what needs to be repaired no matter how long it takes) or to meet management’s quotas resulting in increased profits for themselves and Sears. If the ASA and mechanics choose to repair vehicles properly, then they have demonstrated a deontological approach. “Deontologists base their decisions about what’s right on broad, abstract universal principles or values such as honesty, promise keeping, fairness, loyalty, rights (to safety, privacy, etc.), justice, compassion, and respect for persons and property” (T&N, p.91). Therefore, the ASA and mechanics should repair vehicles properly because it is the right thing to do when considering moral principles such as honesty.
