Sexual development: Many of the most major changes of puberty involve sexual development. Internally, adolescents become able to reproduce. Externally, as some as the changes appear, girls and boys begin to look more like mature women and men. The term “secondary sexual characteristics” refers to a variety of physical traits, such as body shape, voice, and facial hair. Not everyone goes through puberty at the same time. In Western industrialized societies today, the adolescent growth spurt occurs, on average, between the ages of 12 and 14 in boys, and 10 and 12 in girls. But some young people start puberty when they are 8 or 9, and others not until they are in their mid-teens. Generally, girls begin puberty about two years earlier than boys. The duration of puberty also varies greatly, from 11/2 to 6 years in girls and from 2 to 5 years in boys. At this age many adolescents become worried about how they look. This is because different parts of the body grow at different rates during puberty, many adolescents temporarily look and feel awkward. For many years, psychologists believed that puberty was stressful for young people. According to one theory, changes in hormones made young adolescents moody, irritable, and depressed. Physicians now know that most emotional disturbances in adolescence result from changes in the teenager's roles and relationships. Adolescents can minimize difficulties associated with adjusting to puberty by knowing what changes to expect and having healthy attitudes toward them. The timing of puberty may affect an adolescent's social and emotional development in important ways. Because early-maturing boys and girls appear older physically, people often treat them as if they were more mature psychologically than they are. Early maturers will more likely engage in risky behavior during early adolescence, such as experimentation with drugs, or sex. Many psychologists believe these risky actions result from the influence of older teenagers, who befriend early maturers more often than they befriend younger-looking adolescents. Since boys are more athletics, early-maturing boys may have temporary advantages over people their age. As a result, during the first years of adolescence, early-maturing boys tend to be more popular, have higher self-esteem, and have more self-confidence than average- or late-maturing boys. For girls, the effects of early maturing on girls are more mixed. Early-maturing girls tend to be more popular with their peers. But they are also more likely to feel awkward and self-conscious, perhaps because they are uncomfortable with the attention, both welcome and unwelcome, their new appearance draws. Over time, puberty has begun at younger and younger ages. Part of the trend is due to improvements in nutrition and health care. But, the trend seems to be leveling off. Many transmitted diseases Gonorrhea: This is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacterium found only in human beings. The bacterium is nearly always spread from person to person through sexual contact. If left untreated gonorrhea can have serious health consequences, particularly in women. Herpes: Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus, there are a group of virus Herpes «HUR peez», Genital is the name of a widespread sexually transmitted disease. It is also known simply as herpes. Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus, type 2 (HSV-2). HSV-2 is one of the herpesviruses, a group of viruses that cause a wide variety of diseases. See Herpesvirus. HSV-2 infects only human beings and is transmitted during intimate sexual activity. In most cases, infection occurs on or around the sex organs or rectum. The virus then spreads along the nerves that connect the infected area to the central nervous system. The virus may be present in the body without producing signs of illness. An infected person also may experience symptoms that go away, only to reappear months or years later. ---- Chlamydia «kluh MIHD ee uh», is the name commonly given to a widespread sexually transmitted disease. The disease is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Doctors often call this disease nongonococcal urethritis or nonspecific urethritis. The chlamydia bacterium lives only in human beings and is spread from person to person, chiefly through intimate sexual contact. In the United States, chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. It strikes at least 4 million Americans each year. The chlamydia germ can infect many parts of the body, including the sex organs, rectum, and throat. Symptoms of the infection resemble those of gonorrhea.
