When is the last time you had a tasty salmon steak? Do you notice anything strange about the salmon you eat? When I eat salmon I become very paranoid after learning about how fish farms dye and drug the fish to protect them from diseases and to look normal. Fish Farms need to do these things to make enough salmon to support the fish hungry mouths of the world. Manning tells us in his essay “Ghost Town” “The biggest share of the world’s salmon consumption, however – now forty to fifty percent – comes from farmed fish, salmon raised and fed artificially in net pens their entire lives.” Modernization has caused the salmon’s dreadful downfall but hopefully we can use our resources and newly acquired knowledge to give back to the species that we have taken so much away from.
Modernization around the salmon runs and the way we fulfill our salmon needs has taken a great toll on the salmon and its habitat.
