GENE 1. Chapter1 Page 7 This weird New England affirmative always made me laugh, as Finny knew, so I had to laugh, which made me feel less sarcastic and less scared. Gene seems to have many inside issues that might have been brought on by Finny. Instead of getting rid of them, he tries to hide them by playing along or using sarcasm. 2. Chapter 2 Page 18 I couldn’t help envying him that a little, which was perfectly normal. At the beginning of the book, Gene is thought to be a little annoyed by Finny. It makes the reader believe that they are not that close of friends. Gene seems to be hiding his liking of Finny and secretly envies him in many ways. It gives the impression that this will bring them closer together in the future. 3. Chapter 3 Page 26 At that time it would never have occurred to me to say, “ I don’t feel like it tonight,” which was the plain truth every night. It seems that Gene is somewhat intimidated by Finny. He now realizes how close they really are and is afraid to break that bond. Gene has made it where he has no say in what Finny and him get to do. Gene must move past this and have a say in what he is going to do. FINNY 1. Chapter 1 Page 6 He of course saw nothing the slightest bit intimidating about it. Finny is the athletic and fit one of the two. Sometimes, his talents get to him and he is seen to be vain. It seems Gene gets tired of it sometimes and this might affect his behavior throughout the book. 2. Chapter 2 Page 17 Phineas was the essence of this careless peace. The war is the main topic of everyone’s talk and concerns. Although Finny is also somewhat concerned, he hides it by acting careless and free spirited after bending the rules. This makes him the core of the worry-free peace. 3. Chapter 3 Page 25 I wouldn’t have been on that damn limb except for him.
