Competitive Environment: Currently the web conferencing industry is one where there are many players (see exhibit X) and the barrier to entry is low. There are major players in this industry that have brand recognition such as WebEx and there are numerous smaller players that compete in a niche market or on price. There are currently many low cost vendors that are able to offer web conferencing at an attractive price. They are using the 80-20 rule where 80% of the users require only 20% of the most used features. Therefore they are able to operate at a lower cost and are easier to support. With the amount of companies in this space prices offered to customers are expected to continue to decline and therefore smaller profit margins are to be expected. Although there are many players in the industry there are still room for more since there is not a single vendor offering a universal solution that is able to fulfill the needs of every customer. Many companies using web conference differ based on their budget size, specific requirements, and organizational culture. There are many technology innovations expected to take place in this industry as more companies rely on web conferencing to be able to operate their business efficiently. New applications of web conferencing have emerged such as sales webinars, software demonstrations, and remote customer service. The web conferencing industry is expected to grow as more companies rely on this technology to be able to better communicate internally and externally. Many experts expect Microsoft to make a grand entrance to this industry. This could have a great impact on all the players since Microsoft has the resources to introduce a product that could shape the industry.
