In 1959, Randall Thompson brought life to beautiful words by adding music to the powerful poems of Robert Frost. The final result was a composition called “Frostiana”, made up of seven pieces, my favorite being “Choose Something like a Star”. The poetry alone is magnificent, and the music is moving, but the combination of the two is simply stunning. When Frost wrote this poem, he was probably aiming to give the audience something to strive for. “O Star”, as he refers to, could be anything or anyone from a parent, true idol, or a God. The purpose of the star is to feed dreams to the sleepless, give hope to the hopeless, and bring light to those lost in the dark. The star not only inspires us, but it speaks to us of truth that gives comfort. When Thompson brought music to the words, a lot of thought went into the process.
