What is Rap Music? And can it really be considered music? The definition of music in the dictionary is the art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified and evocative composition as through melody, harmony and rhythm. For the most part most Rap lacks harmony of notes, because for the most part there is no chord structure. ... All music by western standards also contains the following, a bass, tenor, alto and soprano and thus, rap or hip-hop does not meet this criteria. So is rap, music or more or less melodic poetry? Another art form of rhythmic and melodic art is oriental opera but technically by western standards it is not considered music but rather a theatrical art form, because of lack of uniformity in time.
