God calls us out of our families and sees us as individuals. Until Genesis twelve, God has been working predominantly with all of mankind, but now He focuses on Abram. Abram had lived his entire life in the land of Ur. The culture of his day was one of community; a person was known for the deeds of his father just as his children would be known by his deeds. So it is out of this culture that God calls Abram specifically, not his community, not his family, but Abram alone. In the same way, God calls each of us individually. When He looks at us, He does not see our parents and their faith, He sees our faith. Therefore, each of us must make the decision whether or not to follow Him. I cannot depend on my parent’s faith to get me to heaven, nor can I depend solely on my church to tell me God’s will. God takes a personal interest in our lives and even links Himself to places that are special in our past.
